Skip Navigation LinksHome > FAQs > Cinch Bug Control – Neem Oil

  1. What is cinch bug?

The hairy cinch bug Blissus leucopterus hirtus is a small insect not more than 4mm long as an adult. The immature nymphs are bright red in colour when they first hatch, and begin to darken from brick red to grey/brown when they are nearly mature. The immature nymphs have a characteristic white band across their abdomen, which is eventually covered by the enlarging wings as the insects become larger and mature. Chinch bugs suck the sap from the crown and stems of grass and thrive in hot, dry weather.

  2. What is Neem Oil?

Neem Oil is a naturally occurring substance containing azadirachtin extracted from the seeds of the neem tree. Neem oil is has been used for years to control many varieties of insects including cinch and is known for having many properties beneficial to human health.

  3. How does neem oil work to control cinch bugs?

Neem oil is toxic to cinch bugs and other insects disrupting their normal mating and feeding behaviour essentially causing them to forget to eat and reproduce.

  4. What else can you expect from your lawn when using this product?

Beneficial control of other insect pests is often observed as neem oil has similar antifeeding effects on many insects.

  5. When and how do I get started?

Neem should be applied in June and July as cinch bugs are actively breeding and growing. Give Green Circles a call: 416-993-5296 or sign up on page 2 of this season's contract.
