-
What is it?
Horticultural vinegar is a non-selective pesticide containing Acetic Acid. Usually the acetic acid is present in concentrations higher than 10%.
-
How does it differ from traditional products?
Horticultural vinegar is a class 11 pesticide otherwise considered a biopesticide.
It is a natural acid that destroys vegetation on contact. Results are seen in minutes to hours rather than
days as with traditional herbicides such as Roundup (Glyphosate) which is now class 8 banned pesticide in
the province of Ontario. Repeated application of horticultural vinegar may be required to control mature or established plants.
-
How does it work?
The acetic acid degrades the tissues of the weeds causing rapid desiccation and necrosis.
-
Can I use Horticultural Vinegar on my lawn?
This product is not usually intended for use in lawns, it should be used in walkways, gravel areas, and anywhere vegetation is not intended to grow.
It is however being used to spot treat crabgrass infestations in lawns before crabgrass can produce seeds. After application,
the area should be repaired with seed or sod before the crabgrass re-establishes.
-
When and how do I get started?
The product works best when applied during sunny and hot weather.
Repeated application may be needed as only the plant surfaces contacting the solution are damaged and roots can
remain to start new growth. Horticultural Vinegar is a relatively strong acid, sufficient to cause skin eye and
breathing irritation if mishandled. A professional applicator would be best to administer treatments with this type of product.
